Homicide detectives make arrest in death of man in Riverside

Toronto police have made an arrest in the death of a man who was found lying on the ground without vital signs in Riverside early Saturday.

Police say they have charged a suspect with second-degree murder Saturday afternoon in the death of Kerry Romain, 47, of Toronto.

Romain was found unconscious and in life-threatening condition, near Eastern Avenue and Lewis Street, east of Broadview Avenue, according to David Viljakainen, deputy commander for Toronto Paramedic Services.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene, shortly after 1 a.m.

The man, located in front of a building at 356 Eastern Ave., was rushed to a trauma centre, police said. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Next of kin has been notified.

Earlier on Saturday, officers canvassed the area for evidence, witnesses and security camera video. Police are continuing to appeal to witnesses to come forward.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted but unprovoked.

Police said it was an isolated incident and add there is no danger to the public.

They also believe the victim and the suspect were acquainted with each other, but police did not know the extent of the relationship.

The suspect's name has not been released, but police say they plan to name him at a later date.

Investigators are not looking for any more suspects.

Romain's death is Toronto's 56th homicide of the year.
