‘I hope you played the lottery.’ Virginia couple’s dedication to same numbers pays off

When a Virginia woman’s husband saw their favorite numbers come up in a lottery drawing, he told his wife, “I hope you played the lottery.”

Her answer was yes.

.Linda Childress won $105,000 in an Aug. 13 drawing from a Cash 5 with EZ Match game, Virginia Lottery officials said in a Sept. 8 news release.

Childress of Petersburg, Virginia, told officials she “likes those numbers because they correspond with various family birthdays and anniversaries.”

Her winning numbers that day were 5-7-8-23-27, according to the release. The couple often uses those exact numbers when playing the lottery, she told officials, so when her husband saw them come up in the drawing, he was hopeful.

“I couldn’t believe it was true!” Childress said. “It feels like a dream!”

Childress told lottery officials she plans to use the prize money to buy a new vehicle.

“Cash 5 with EZ Match features a rolling jackpot, starting at a minimum of $100,000,” according to the Virginia Lottery site. “The odds of matching all five numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 749,398.”

Proceeds from the Virginia lottery go toward K-12 education, officials say.

Petersburg is about 25 miles south of Richmond.
