Huge celebration returning to downtown Modesto. Includes free movie ‘Coco’ at the State

The celebration of the dead, Dia de los Muertos, returns with its annual big event in downtown Modesto. Comedian Terry Fator plays the Gallo Center, along with other artists. These are just some of the entertainment options in the Modesto region set from Oct. 21-27.

Dia de los Muertos

The annual holiday Dia de los Muertos honors the dead. This year’s celebration in Modesto will include musical entertainment, ballet folklorico, lip-sync entertainers, children’s activities, a Catrin & Catrina procession, altars, vendors and more. There will be an information area with nonprofits and agencies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, a free showing of the film “Coco” will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the State Theatre.

Studio tour

The Artist Open Studio Tour returns to 24 art studios in Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Oakdale and Knights Ferry. There will be 47 artists selling handmade fabric, jewelry, mosaics, sculpture, photography, painting and cards. Free tour booklets are available at Mistlin Gallery, 1015 J St., Modesto.

Terry Fator

“America’s Got Talent” winner Terry Fator and his cast of puppets will play the Gallo Center with a new version of his Las Vegas show, “Terry Fator: On the Road Again.” His performance features comedy, modern songs and hits from the 1960s to the 1990s, musical parodies and ventriloquism. Limited tickets were available.

Christopher Cross

Classic pop singer Christopher Cross brings his music to Turlock Community Theatre. His 1980 self-titled debut album won five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”) and Best New Artist.

Parsons Dance

Straight No Chaser

The male a cappella group Straight No Chaser has made numerous national TV appearances. The nine-member group returns to the Gallo Center with its “unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense ... and with a sense of humor,” according to the Gallo Center website.

“Murder on the Orient Express”

The Gallo Center Repertory Company presents “Murder on the Orient Express.” Detective Hercule Poirot is called to London and books a compartment on the Orient Express train, where he meets a host of diverse characters. As a snowdrift halts the train, one is found dead. Poirot sets out to solve the murder.

Kiss Revisited

Tribute band Kiss Revisited will play a show at the State Theatre in Modesto. Its musicians are veterans of the tribute scene. Collectively, the band shares more than 30 years of professional accomplishments and musical performances nationwide and internationally. Opening is Modesto band Triple D.
