Human remains were found at the Fredericton landfill on Monday morning, police say.

Police went to the landfill on the southeastern outskirts of the city in response to a call at about 10:50  a.m., a news release said.

The release provided no other details, and spokesperson Megan Barker declined to answer any questions, citing the investigation.

Brad Janes of the Capital Region Service Commission, which manages the landfill, directed all questions to police.

He said the debris section of the dump had been closed for a while on Monday, and police had been on the scene. They had left by closing time at 4:30 p.m.

An employee with the Captal Region Service Commission said that the debris section has been closed earlier in the day and police were on scene at the dump, but they had left by late afternoon.

Police are asking anyone with information to let them know.

The landfill is on Allison Boulevard, just off Route 7.

This is not the first time human remains have been discovered at the Fredericton landfill. A body was found in 2019.
