Prep football recap: Skyview, BK win big to set up 4A title bout. Eagle, Meridian rout foes

The stage is set for Skyview to try to stop the No. 1 team in 4A next week.

Quarterback Cache Beus accounted for five touchdowns Friday night in a 48-14 win at Ridgevue that extended the Hawks’ winning streak to five games. Skyview now heads into a showdown at undefeated Bishop Kelly with the 4A Southern Idaho Conference championship on the line.

Beus had four rushing touchdowns and added one through the air. He completed nine of his first 10 passes and finished the game 13-of-22 for 175 yards. The senior also added 99 rushing yards for the Hawks (6-2, 4-0).

“(Former BYU and Virginia head coach) Bronco Mendenall called them ‘Thor-terbacks,’” Skyview head coach David Robinson said. “That’s how we view Cache. He’s really opened up our offense with his skill set.”

Skyview clinched a spot in the 4A state playoffs with Friday’s blowout. Next up is the matchup with the undefeated Knights, who cruised to a 49-0 win over Columbia on Friday.

“It was really important for us to come out and play well tonight because we knew that game was waiting for us,” Beus said. “The O-line played great tonight, the backs and receivers played their butts off, and we’re going to be ready next week.”

Beus was behind all four of the Hawks’ touchdowns in the first half. He just missed out on a fifth score after losing a fumble inside Ridgevue’s 10-yard line on Skyview’s second drive of the game.

He found the end zone three times on the ground on what was basically the same play. He’d fake a handoff to physical running back Henry Downey and call his own number on a run up the middle. Beus’ third TD gave Skyview a 28-0 lead at halftime.

“More often than not, Cache is going to keep the ball if you look at the stats,” Robinson said. “But when we do give it to Henry, he’s more than capable. So you have to honor both.”

Beus’ lone touchdown pass was a 10-yard strike to Dane Bowman that capped a three-play scoring drive in the second quarter. The QB opened the second half with a 24-yard run and capped that drive with a one-yard TD run that gave the Hawks a 35-0 lead.

“He’s a stud,” Robinson said. “We’re blessed to have him, and he works really hard to earn the success he’s had.”

Downey rushed for 92 yards and a score on 15 carries. The Hawks’ final touchdown came from backup quarterback Dakota Dodge, who found Kimball Robison on a 5-yard scoring strike after Beus made his exit with the game well in hand.

Cash McKie got Ridgevue (2-5, 1-3 4A SIC) on the scoreboard with an 82-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 140 yards on 15 carries.

BISHOP KELLY 49, COLUMBIA 0

The Knights (8-0, 4-0) stormed to a 42-0 halftime lead on their way to an easy home victory.

Tylan Kaschmitter rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries to lead a 200-yard ground attack for Bishop Kelly. Cooper Cammann, who had 44 yards rushing and 38 receiving, also ran for two scores.

The Knights played without leading rusher Peter Minnaert.

Stats were not reported for Columbia (3-5, 1-4).

The No. 1-ranked Mustangs (8-0, 6-0) prepped for the 5A Southern Idaho Conference championship game by dominating the Lions (4-4, 2-4).

Zeke Martinez was 14-for-16 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns for Meridian, including a 72-yard scoring strike to Cole Jones, who had five catches for 114 yards. Marco Del Rio rushed for 68 yards on just three carries to lead a balanced ground attack that churned out 158 yards.

Capital (2-6, 1-4) finished fourth in the Foothills Division and will travel to Mountain View in next week’s cross-division round.

MIDDLETON 42, CENTENNIAL 7

The Vikings ran for 311 yards Thursday to clinch the third seed from the 5A SIC Foothills Division and a home game against Borah in the cross-division round.

Jake Perez ran for 91 yards and a touchdown to lead the balanced Middleton (6-2, 3-2) ground game. Cole Holman added 86 yards and a score, and Patxi Franks ran for 63 yards.

Middleton quarterback Cash Weeks finished 6-for-14 for 104 yards and three touchdowns.

Centennial’s Tate Keddington went 5-for-12 for 47 yards. He threw a 16-yard touchdown to Daniel Demers in the third quarter as the Vikings limited Centennial to 162 yards of offense.

The Patriots (1-7, 1-4) travel to Boise next week in a must-win game for their playoff fate.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN 43, TIMBERLINE 10

The Grizzlies’ defense scored on a safety and limited Timberline to 180 yards to wrap up their 5A SIC Foothills Division schedule Thursday.

Rocky Mountain (5-3, 4-1) racked up 389 yards of offense while continuing to cycle through quarterbacks. The Grizzlies pulled away when Cam Crum scored on a 1-yard sneak to close the first half, then recovered a pooch kick on the second half’s opening kickoff. Trey Broadbent punched in a 6-yard touchdown run on the extra possession, turning a 13-3 game late in the first half into a 27-3 advantage 3 minutes into the third quarter.

Broadbent led the ground game with 80 yards and two TDs. Carson Adams added 72 yards, and Zack Schledewitz finished with 45 yards and a score as the Grizzlies ran for 246 yards and five touchdowns.

Timberline quarterback Jack Brant finished 8-for-22 for 123 yards and a TD.

Rocky Mountain finished second in the division standings and will host Kuna next week, while Timberline (1-7, 1-4) will play at Owyhee. Both are winner-to-state games.

HOMEDALE 33, FRUITLAND 0

The No. 2 team in 3A kept its undefeated season going with a shutout and clinched a state playoff berth.

The Trojans (8-0, 4-0 SRV) got 273 total yards from quarterback Dillon Fine and held Fruitland (2-6,2-2) to 111 yards of offense to roll to the easy win.

Fine was 20-of-28 passing for 238 yards and two touchdowns, and he also rushed for 35 yards. Andrew Marston led Homedale’s rushing attack with 84 yards on 17 carries, including a pair of TDs. The Trojans, who face McCall-Donnelly next week to close the regular season, scored touchdowns on their first three possessions.

NOTUS 48, IDAHO CITY 14

Grayson Benitez ran for 182 yards and five touchdowns, and the Pirates (5-1, 3-0 1A Division I WIC) jumped out to a 48-0 lead and halftime on their way to clinching their fourth straight league title.
