Europe's energy sector relies too much on China to entertain the idea of de-risking, the CEO of Siemens Energy said, reflecting the dilemma of an industry in need of supplies from the world's No.2 economy - but not the competition that comes with it. The comments by Christian Bruch come as global trade tensions with China are heating up, with the U.S. raising tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles this week and the European Union looking into similar steps to protect local players from unfair competition. Meantime, the EU has launched an investigation into Chinese wind turbine makers and whether they benefit from subsidies in their efforts to undercut the pricing of Western companies like Vestas, Nordex and GE Vernova.
An attorney said he has spoken to “20 to 30 times more people” who say they were abused at the Michigan facility.
China said on Thursday that U.S. and European assertions of excess capacity were "naked trade protectionism" and that efforts to constrain new energy exports from the World's No.2 economy would frustrate global efforts to tackle climate change. Growing alarm over Chinese industrial overcapacity flooding the European Union with cheap products is opening a new front in the West's trade war with Beijing, which kicked off with Washington's import tariffs in 2018. "A country cannot be labelled as having excess capacity just because it has more capacity than it needs," He Yadong, a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said.

McDonald’s plans to introduce a $5 meal deal in the U.S. next month to counter slowing sales and customers’ frustration with high prices. The deal would let customers get a four-piece McNugget, small fries, a small drink and either a McDouble burger or a McChicken sandwich for $5 in most areas, according to a person familiar with the deal who wasn’t authorized to discuss its details. The month-long deal is scheduled to begin June 25 and will be advertised nationally. Some stores with higher cost
(Reuters) -Uber Technologies is introducing a shuttle service in the U.S. and widening a delivery tie-up with membership-only retailer Costco as part of a series of initiatives unveiled on Wednesday to attract price-conscious consumers amid competition from rival Lyft. The initiatives were unveiled at the company's GO-GET annual event for new products and are meant to maintain growth at the ride-share and delivery giant after a strong 2023 that saw it reporting its first-ever annual profit. The San Francisco, California-based company said it will allow Uber Shuttle users to reserve up to five seats in advance on buses operating in high-traffic areas like airports, concerts, and sports events.
SHANGHAI (Reuters) -Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio said on Thursday it would launch one new model per year under its lower-priced Onvo brand and price them similarly to gasoline vehicles, as the firm expands its lineups to family cars in the country's overcrowded auto market. The announcement came a day after the company unveiled the Onvo L60 SUV with a sticker price starting from 219,900 yuan ($30,476), 12% below the price of Tesla's Model Y which starts at 249,900 yuan in China. Nio said on Thursday it would have a second Onvo model targeting larger families coming up next and expected the newly launched brand to positively contribute to its overall profitability when monthly sales reach 20,000 units.

Ford Motor Co has asked its electric-vehicle suppliers to reduce costs in an attempt to support profitability, saying "everything is on the table," according to a company memo seen by Reuters. Discounts and sharp price cuts from competitors, including EV market leader Tesla, to sustain consumer demand amid high interest rates have forced Ford to reciprocate. "To ensure affordability, it is of paramount importance that our portfolio achieves further levels of material cost efficiency."
Walt Disney has cut its investment in programming for traditional television networks pretty dramatically as part of its strategy to maximize audiences and profit in the streaming TV era, Chief Executive Bob Iger said on Wednesday. Iger said he looked expansively at traditional media when he came out of retirement to return to Disney as CEO in November 2022. He concluded that traditional channels such as ABC still serve as an important marketing tool and help reach older viewers who are not watching series such as "Abbott Elementary" on Disney's streaming platforms.

High energy costs, weak global demand, a disruptive shift towards net-zero economies, and growing competition from China are raising existential questions for Germany's economic model. CEOs and business lobbies say its historically strong industrial base is close to cracking, a "de-industrialisation" risk often accompanied by calls for government support. Monthly industrial production data give the most obvious snapshots of how the sector is doing, and they show a clear decline since the end of 2017, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and now the Ukraine war.
OTTAWA — Manufacturing sales fell 2.1 per cent to $69.9 billion in March as sales of petroleum and coal products and motor vehicles fell, Statistics Canada said Wednesday. Olivia Cross, North America economist at Capital Economics, said the result was not as bad as the early estimate that pointed to a drop of 2.8 per cent, but it still means sales fell 0.9 per cent over the first quarter. "The weakness of manufacturing sales in March suggests that the economy lost momentum heading into the secon

NEW YORK (Reuters) -At least one Mondelez investor, Swedish pension fund AP7, will back a resolution calling for the Oreo cookie maker to conduct an independent study of the risks of continuing to do business in Russia, which faces a vote at the company's annual meeting this month. McDonald's and Starbucks are among the brands that departed Russia after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, while others such as Nestle remained there. AP7, which holds roughly 1.7 million Mondelez shares as of May, will support the resolution, said Johan Floren, the firm's chief environmental, social and governance and communication officer, in an email.
