Introducing the 2023 Wichita Eagle high school boys tennis All-Metro team

The Wichita area featured some of the best high school boys tennis players in Kansas this season and that star power is highlighted on The Wichita Eagle’s 2023 All-Metro boys tennis team.

The All-Metro squad consists of the three top singles players, the two top doubles teams and the Coach of the Year from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties, based on season-long performance with an emphasis on postseason success.

Maize senior Sam Ritchie, who reached the Class 5A singles final, was named the Boys Tennis Player of the Year on the All-Metro team.

Paul Jittawait, Andover junior

He entered the state tournament with a superb 31-2 record and reached the semifinals in the 5A bracket, but a second-day injury forced him to withdraw and settle for a fourth-place finish at state. After receiving second-team honors last season, Jittawait earned his first All-Metro selection as a junior.

Sam Ritchie, Maize senior

Ritchie ended his career with his best, rallying to reach the 5A finals at the state tournament and leading Maize to a third-place team trophy. He finished with a 28-5 record and earned his first All-Metro selection after receiving second-team honors the previous two years.

Barrett Steven, Bishop Carroll senior

Steven finished his career as a three-time All-Metro selection after earning a nod in singles his final two years. He finished his senior year with a 24-6 record, dropping a match to the eventual 5A singles champion in the semifinals and finishing with a third-place medal at the state tournament.

Micah Dahlsten (senior) and Asher Deutschendorf (sophomore), Hesston

The lone entry from the area to win a state championship, Dahlsten and Deutschendorf reached the pinnacle by winning the 3-1A state title in doubles in their second year as a pairing. The duo finished with a 28-5 record and helped Hesston win the third-place team trophy. Both are first-time All-Metro selections, improving from their second-team nod from last season. Dahlsten also received second-team honors in 2021 for doubles when he paired with Deutschendorf’s older brother.

Justin Franz (senior) and Otis Musser (senior), Newton

In their second year together as a pair, Franz and Musser delivered their best season yet with a 31-6 record that featured a third-place finish at the 5A state tournament. The duo took the most games off the eventual state champions, then rallied to win a three-set thriller in the consolation match. The duo earned second-team All-Metro honors last season, while Franz also had second-team recognition in doubles as a sophomore.

Dave Hawley, Collegiate coach

There was no question who was winning the honor, as Hawley called it wraps on a coaching career that will never be matched. He won a combined 59 team state titles as the Collegiate boys and girls tennis coach over the last four decades. While the Spartans didn’t win a state title this season — Hawley actually won state more than he didn’t in his career — they still finished second in the 3-1A state tournament.
