Iqaluit municipal election nomination deadline nears

In addition to the federal election, Iqaluit residents will also vote for mayor and city council on October 19, and the city's chief electoral officer is reminding any would-be candidates to get their nomination forms in.

The election, which is the same day as the municipal election for the neighbouring territorial capital of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, will see Iqaluit elect a mayor, eight city councillors, and members of the three District Education Authorities.

Tania Scott, the city's chief electoral officer, says anyone wanting to stand their election must submit nomination forms by 3 p.m. EST on Monday, September 14.

"They can pick up nomination forms any time now, at the city hall, or online at iqvotes.ca," says Scott. "We will review them, take their photo, put them up on the website and announce that they are running for nomination."

Residents can also go to city hall to check that their name is on the municipal voters list — the same list used by Elections Nunavut.

Advance and mobile polls will be held on October 5.
