John Paul II boys win SCISA cross country state championship

The John Paul II boys cross country team came home as state champions at SCISA state cross country meet on Saturday at Heathwood Hall.

The Warriors won the SCISA 3A championship while the girls finished second. The John Paul II boys had three runners in the top six and finished with 52 points. Spartanburg Christian was second with 67.

Zac Henderson (17:24) was fifth to lead John Paul II runners. Balke Hubik (17:42) was sixth and Sebastian Frickel (17:43) was seventh.

Hilton Head Christian was eighth and Hilton Head Prep was 10th.

JP II’s Abby Brock (20:25) was second in the girls race behind Spartanburg Christian’s McKee Kent. Brady Mahoney (20:57) was seventh. John Paul II finished with 55 points, seven behind champion Northside Christian.

Hilton Head Christian’s Devon Yarde was 13th.

Holy Trinity Clasical’s Virginia Brunson (22:57) won the SCISA 2A girls race in helping the team with a runner-up finish. Bryant Salley was sixth, AnnaCate Gray eighth and Sarah Reedy was 10th.

Holy Trinity finished four points behind winner Calhoun Academy.

Austin Miles finished seventh in the boys race as Holy Trinity came in eighth. Thomas Heyward’s Jovani Rogriguez was eighth and Beaufort Academy’s Cohen Weaver came in 10th. Beaufort Academy finished fourth as a team and Thomas Heyward was fifth.
