Jon Stewart, Seth Meyers skewer Democrats' 'warm embrace' of Trump at inauguration

President Donald Trump has officially been sworn in for a second term, and late-night hosts are here to unpack a historic Inauguration Day.

All the major late-night comedians reacted to Trump's inauguration on Monday, with some expressing surprise at the way former President Joe Biden behaved cordially toward his successor after previously describing him as a threat to democracy.

On "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart mocked Biden for having tea with Trump at the White House the morning of the inauguration, saying sarcastically, "It's always important to keep up the tea tradition when you hand over the keys to … I'm sorry, what did you call him? Hitler."

"I'm not saying Biden should have done his own insurrection, but there's got to be a happy medium between storming the Capitol and, 'Would you like a crumpet?'" Stewart said.

Noting that Democrats who "warned Americans to shun this wannabee fascist dictator" attended the inauguration, the comedian jokingly imagined them saying, "Look at me, ma! Oh, let's go see Hitler and get a quick selfie first!"

Former first lady Michelle Obama skipped the event, though, so Stewart said that only she "seemed to have the consistent ethical stance of saying, 'When they go low, I stay the (expletive) home.'"

As for Trump's speech, Stewart joked that the president's remarks "followed the American tradition of a passive-aggressive transfer of power," with Trump slamming the Biden administration while Biden sat behind him.

Seth Meyers slams Democrats for 'palling around' with Trump at the inauguration

In a "Closer Look" segment, Seth Meyers said that when Trump's swearing-in ceremony was moved indoors due to the cold weather, his supporters were "left out in the cold while Trump gave toasty, VIP seats to the wealthy tech oligarchs."

"Do I really have to explain the metaphor here?" the comedian asked.

Numerous billionaires, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, attended the inauguration.

But like Stewart, Meyers said it was "even weirder to see Democrats, who correctly called Trump an existential threat to democracy, palling around with him."

The "warm embrace of Trump by Democrats, and especially Joe Biden," has been "so preposterous" because they're "not going to get anything out of it," Meyers continued.

In particular, Meyers skewered Biden for saying "welcome home" to Trump when he arrived at the White House, joking that the former president was "treating Donald Trump like an 18-year-old back from his first semester at college."

Meyers described Trump's inauguration speech as an "unsettling, low-energy mix of ominous fascism and weird" topics that "no one except Donald Trump and his minions even care about." He added that Trump laid out a "chilling vision of an authoritarian regime" and said the inauguration showed that he is "going to put the interests of wealthy oligarchs before Americans."

Meyers also argued that "instead of cozying up to that, Democrats should be digging in to oppose it."

Jimmy Kimmel pans Trump inauguration speech: Not 'uplifting' or 'well-written'

"Our long, national nightmare was officially sworn in another time," Jimmy Kimmel told viewers on Monday, comparing Trump's inaugural address to Emperor Palpatine's speech announcing the creation of the Galactic Empire in "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith."

"It was not an uplifting, or even well-written, speech," Kimmel said, going on to argue that Trump "didn't seem to be enjoying himself" and was "very subdued reading from the teleprompter."

In reaction to the number of tech billionaires who attended the inauguration, the comedian also concluded that Trump is "selling the country to the highest bidder."

Stephen Colbert jokes fire marshal wouldn't allow Trump to place hand on Bible

In his monologue, Stephen Colbert joked about Trump's failure to place his hand on the Bible during his swearing-in, with the comedian implying the president would have burst into flames if he had done so.

"When the ceremony was going to be outside, he was going to put his hand on the Bible, but when they moved it inside, the fire marshal wouldn't allow it," he joked.

Overall, Colbert described Trump's speech as "just plain weird" and a "predictable hodgepodge of well-worn complaints and grim news."

Jimmy Fallon compares Trump's second term to 'Squid Game'

On "The Tonight Show," Jimmy Fallon joked that "America is rolling the dice with the second Trump presidency," like "we somehow survived the first Squid Game and then signed back up for a second."

Fallon also mocked first lady Melania Trump's inauguration fashion, beginning his monologue by wearing a wide-brimmed hat similar to the one she wore and announcing, "After this, we're going to play who wore it better: Me, Melania, or the Hamburglar."

Fallon added, "People weren't sure if she was there for the inauguration or to kill Indiana Jones."
