Kamiakin, Chiawana, Richland and Kennewick all heading to WA state football playoffs

With Kamiakin, Chiawana, Richland, and Kennewick all winning crossover playoffs this past weekend, about 40% of the Mid-Columbia Conference advances to the Washington state football playoffs.

Kamiakin rolled over Wenatchee 42-0; Chiawana outgunned Moses Lake 49-32; Richland knocked off previous unbeaten Eastmont 51-44; and Kennewick thrashed Mercer Island 38-0.

The only MCC team to fall in a playoff game was Hermiston, which lost 49-6 on Friday at Eastside Catholic.

Here’s a look at the crossover playoff games from this past weekend:

KAMIAKIN 42, WENATCHEE 0

Kamiakin got into the state 4A playoffs after beating Wenatchee 42-0 at Lampson Stadium last Friday in a regional crossover game.

The Braves scored on their first six offensive possessions, and that was it.

Kamiakin was able to rest its starters in the second half, as the game went to a running clock.

“We had a very good week of practice,” said Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin, who did mention that some of the linemen got testy with each other in those practices.

Camden Schmidt was more specific.

“A couple of fights broke out,” he said. “The linemen were fighting.”

Which turned out great for the Braves. They were ready to play Friday night.

Schmidt was the leader, rushing 14 times for 87 yards and scoring two touchdowns. He also intercepted a pass on defense.

Braves QB Trent Woodhouse was 8-for-10 passing for 63 yards and three TD passes.

Kamiakin defensive lineman Christian Mejia led the defensive unit with 5 tackles and a quarterback sack.

Kamiakin will play host to Emerald Ridge at 6 p.m., Friday, at Lampson Stadium in a first-round 4A state playoff game.

CHIAWANA 49, MOSES LAKE 32

A day after the team learned that assistant coach Robert Booth had unexpectedly passed away, Chiawana found a way to beat Moses Lake at Lions Field on Friday.

Hunter Taylor rushed 37 times for 240 yards, scoring four touchdowns.

The Riverhawks jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back.

Defensively, Chiawana picked off four passes. That included two pick-6’s by sophomore Tayten Cissne.

The Riverhawks are set to play at Gonzaga Prep in the 4A playoffs on Saturday. Kickoff has yet to be announced.

RICHLAND 51, EASTMONT 44

In a wild shootout in East Wenatchee on Saturday, the visiting Bombers outscored the Wildcats 37-27 in the second half of a 4A crossover playoff.

Josh Woodard was 24 for 33 for 300 yards passing for the Bombers, with four TD passes.

According to Richland High, it was Woodard’s seventh game this season in which he passed for 300 yards or more.

Most of Woodard’s passes went to three receivers: Colson Mackey (7 catches for 94 yards), Brody Bocek (7-93) and Rayce Reeves (7-90).

Jakob Brannon rushed 18 times for 96 yards for Richland.

Linebackers Cannon Weikum (16 tackles) and Sylen Kissel-Kauhane (14 tackles) led the Bombers defense.

Gunnar Peterson had a monster game for Eastmont, rushing 33 times for 302 yards and four touchdowns.

As the No. 16 seed, Richland will play at No. 1 Graham-Kapowsin at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Art Crane Stadium.

KENNEWICK 38, MERCER ISLAND 0

The host Lions forced five turnovers en route to the shutout victory in a 3A Round of 32 game Saturday at Lampson Stadium.

No other stats were available, but the Lions (a 5 seed) will play host to No. 12 Mountain View of Vancouver at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Lampson Stadium.

EASTSIDE CATHOLIC 49, HERMISTON 6

The host Crusaders routed Hermiston in a 3A Round of 32 playoff on Friday night in Seattle, ending the Bulldogs’ season at 4-6.

Issac Corey passed for 214 yards and a touchdown — a 55-yard strike to Landon Shilhanek.

Austin Bledsoe caught 3 passes for 82 yards for Hermiston.
