Kamiakin High grad makes Western Canadian Baseball League All-Star team

Brady Bean has had a great summer already, and we’re just halfway there.

The Kamiakin High grad began the summer by announcing he was transferring from Saint Martin’s University after his freshman season to the University of Portland.

Then he started playing summer college baseball for the Medicine Hat Mavericks of the Western Canadian Baseball League.

Bean’s stats through last week included a .301 batting average, 4 home runs, 20 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.

That was good enough for coaches to name him the starting shortstop for the East team at last week’s WCBL All-Star Game.

Yep, great summer.

Rodeo

A more local cowboys and cowgirls had some strong performances in the latter half of last week at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyo.

Hermiston’s Molly Davis placed second in the barrel racing’s performance No. 7 on Wednesday night, when she and her horse crossed the finish line in 17.409 seconds.

Then Hermiston’s Cydney Estes placed second in breakaway roping on Thursday morning (performance No. 8) with a time of 2.2 seconds.

Later Thursday night, in performance No. 9, Hermiston’s Cameron Estes clocked 2.43 second in breakaway roping for a second-place finish.

During that same performance, Prosser’s Peyton Robinson grabbed a second-place finish in bareback riding, earning a score of 73 points.

Walla Walla’s Hadley Hiner finished eighth in the average for breakaway roping for the week.

She averaged 8.63 seconds in her two go-rounds.

There were 153 contestants in the breakaway roping event.

Signings and commitments

Madeline Gebers did something these last two years at Spokane Community College that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen.

Gebers, a Kennewick High grad, played three sports for the Sasquatch: volleyball in the fall, women’s basketball in the winter, and for the women’s track and field team in the spring.

Well, she’s going to slow down a bit.

She’s headed to Northwest Nazarene University soon, where she’ll play just two sports — basketball and track and field.

  • Othello’s Annalee Coronado will be playing for the Central Washington University women’s basketball team this fall.

  • Southridge senior-to-be Melise Brown has verbally committed to playing softball for Central Washington University. Brown — who can polar middle infield or catch — plays for the Washington Angels club.
