Kansas City, don’t subsidize private parking at KCI Airport. Keep taxpayers informed | Opinion

It’s our money

Hats off to Mike Hendricks for continuing to do a good job for us. His article about a proposal for the city to subsidize a private parking lot that would compete with the city-funded parking at Kansas City International Airport is an example of what we need from The Star. (Oct. 21, 1A, “KC panel weighs tax breaks for private parking lot near KCI”)

We are also tired of the misuse of TIF funds. Thanks for keeping an eye on the public purse.

The worst thing

There are so many despicable things about Donald Trump to dislike, but one really stands out to me. It’s not that he was found liable for raping E. Jean Carroll, and the judge clarified that “the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.” It’s not that he is a nasty, mean-spirited, violent bully, or that he has 91 felony charges against him. It’s not even that he tried and is still trying to overthrow our democracy.

No. It’s that he mocks and laughs at someone being attacked with a hammer. He thinks it’s funny and OK to hit someone in the head with a hammer. Quite honestly, all the people who cheer at that aren’t any better. Also, it’s disgusting that he uses that event to manipulate those people to go along with him in this disgraceful, inhuman behavior.

I can’t think of anything lower. He acts like the vermin he talks about. He is poisoning the blood of this country. I would say he alone is doing it — but that’s not true. Anyone who would vote for something like that is complicit. And whoever votes for him is pitiful.

Get the plan

Medicare’s open enrollment period ends Dec. 7. As beneficiaries in Missouri evaluate plans, here are several key things to consider:

  • Compare deductibles, copayments and premiums to understand the financial aspects of each plan.

  • Understand your plan’s prescription drug coverage.

  • Consider a plan with dental, vision, and hearing benefits, as well as other specialized offerings.

  • Evaluate your plan’s reputation using the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov.

  • Be sure to use free, credible resources to help answer your questions before the AEP deadline.

To compare plans and benefits and get an estimated cost for each plan, visit Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

Peace, please

I think the world would be a better place with more compassion — compassion not necessarily with deference, but rather compassion that seeks to afford other people grace, rooted in knowing that our lives are infinitely occupied with just trying to navigate the overwhelming and unknowable character of life with all its weirdnesses, ups and downs, and the often absurd nature of existence.

Patience and grace are underappreciated virtues that lie at the fundamental foundation and essence of the better part of our individual and collective nature. These could be tapped, and goodwill could reign instead of discord if people were more patient with one another’s unique (but also universal) struggles, despite whatever differences and limitations we may encounter or possess. And despite these limitations, as we all indeed have limitations, at least we should make an effort to live peacefully with them and among ourselves, our family, friends and neighbors. That is the crux of any truly righteous or moral philosophy.

So today or tomorrow, maybe try to be a bit more patient with one another, and everything else will be A-OK. Peace begins with a smile or perhaps, better yet, a hug.

Love and peace to all.
