Kansas City ranked among hottest rental markets in US. So is this Johnson County city

For the third month in a row, Kansas City is ranked among the most popular cities for renters, according to a national publication that tracks rental market trends.

After ranking No. 1 in the country for the past two months, Kansas City dropped four spots and now ranks 5th among cities that garner the most interest from renters. Overland Park isn’t too far behind, ranking 18th this month after ranking 2nd in June.

This is according to the July report from RentCafe, a website that focuses on users searching for apartments across the 150 largest cities in the United States.

RentCafe said in its review of Kansas City that traffic on their apartment listing pages for the city increased by 49%, showing a strong interest among potential renters. Renters looking for apartments in Kansas City also favorited more than four times the number of listings compared to July 2023.

Kansas City finished with a total score of 61.76, a nine-point drop compared to June. RentCafe calculates these totals using its methodology:

  • Availability rate, found by dividing the total vacant units by the total units in a city.

  • Page views, which are calculated by dividing the total number of monthly pages with the total renter population in a city.

  • Favorites, which is calculated by looking at the total monthly rental listing added to a user’s favorite section and dividing that by the total renter population in a city.

  • Saved searches, found by dividing the total number of monthly saved searches for a city by the total renter population in a city.

Kansas City finished behind No. 1 Arlington, Virginia, No. 2 Orlando, No. 3 Cincinnati and No. 4 Omaha.
