Kansas football vs. Iowa State Cyclones: Five things to know about Jayhawks’ next game

Kansas football earned its biggest win of the season on Saturday, a 38-33 upset of Oklahoma. For that, the Jayhawks were named the national team of the week by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

The Jayhawks ended an 18-game losing streak to Oklahoma with the win. Also, KU is now bowl-eligible for the second straight season — and ranked in this week’s AP Top 25.

No. 22 KU (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) will travel to Ames to face Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Cyclones defeated Baylor 30-18 on Saturday.

Five things to know

1. Kansas hasn’t beaten Iowa State in Ames since 2008. The Cyclones are 8-2 in their last 10 games against the Jayhawks, but lost 14-11 last season in Lawrence. Iowa State is currently on a three-game winning streak overall. KU leads the all-time series 51-6-45.

2. Like Kansas, Iowa State has exceeded expectations so far this season. The Cyclones had a tumultuous offseason due to a reported gambling scandal that involved their starting quarterback and other key players. ISU was projected to finish 10th in the conference in the Big 12 media preseason poll but is currently third.

3. KU’s defense has struggled to contain opposing ground games, giving up 174 yards per game. Luckily for the Jayhawks, the Cyclones struggle to run the ball. Iowa State averages 122 yards on the ground for an average of 3.9 yards per carry. This matchup will be pivotal in what will likely be a close game.

4. Iowa State freshman quarterback Rocco Becht has played well so far. He has thrown for 1,702 yards and 13 touchdowns. Still, he’s prone to making mistakes — he has six interceptions on the season. Kansas is tied for third in the nation in defensive touchdowns.

5. The player to watch on Iowa State’s defense is defensive back Beau Freyler. He leads the Cyclones in total tackles (57). He also has one sack and three interceptions. If Jason Bean is back at quarterback, he’ll have to be aware. The same goes for Jalon Daniels.
