Kate Middleton’s Dress Is So Similar to This Famous Princess Diana Polka-Dot Look

Update: May 14, 2019

When you know your outfit is good, you make a point to rewear it. Even duchesses think that way: Kate Middleton has been known to bring out her favorite pieces time and time again, some of them having been in her closet for over a decade. She did it again on Tuesday during a visit to a D-Day exhibition in Bletchley, England. And the last time she wore this particular style, it drew major comparisons to Princess Diana.

On her latest official appearance, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a collared Alessandra Rich dress, which was previously seen in Prince Charles' official seventieth-birthday family portraits. Here she is in Bletchley today.

When the family portraits were first unveiled in November, many pointed out the resemblance between Middleton's outfit and a polka-dot ensemble worn by Princess Diana in the eighties. And it's just as uncanny the second time around. Scroll down to spot the similarities for yourself.

Original story:

Take a close look at Kate Middleton's style, and you'll find plenty of outfits reminiscent of Princess Diana's. It goes beyond wearing the late royal's favorite tiara: It's mimicking her penchant for bold monochromatic looks, festive fascinators, and even polka dots. You can add yet another outfit to their list of shared fashion moments, courtesy of the latest royal family portrait.

Clarence House surprise-released images of a group photo shoot done in honor of Prince Charles' seventieth birthday, featuring Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall; the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Royal fans instantly began gushing over the candid nature of the portraits—and it didn't take long for them to find a connection to Princess Diana, via Middleton's outfit.

In the photos the Duchess of Cambridge wears a navy polka-dot dress with a contrasting ivory collar by Alessandra Rich. And for some, it brought to mind a style worn by Princess Diana back in 1985, while at home in Kensington Palace.

When the photos are side by side, the similarities are striking. The designer of Middleton's dress is known for her vintage-inspired silhouettes and prints, so we can partially credit the eighties look of the style to that. Still, the duchess has a well-documented streak of Diana-esque outfits, dating back to 2005, when she first started being photographed with Prince William.

This exact Alessandra Rich dress also happens to be a celebrity favorite, having been worn by Sarah Jessica Parker, Daisy Ridley, and Abigail Spencer—the latter to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding, no less. The royal connection is strong.
