Kate's 5 fun things to do in and around Waterloo region: May 10 to 12
It's Mother's Day weekend and while there's a chance of showers, there may also be some sunshine and there are many events happening in the area to enjoy.
There are multiple Mother's Day brunches happening at restaurants across Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County.
The Village of St. Jacobs is promoting celebrating the weekend with mom with special events, sales and meals.
Kids in the Kitchen at the Kitchener Market will also run Saturday morning with a special Mother's Day themed session of mini cakes. There is a cost to this workshop and registration is required.
There's a spring plant sale and eco market at Rare Charitable Research Reserve's Slit Barn at 768 Blair Rd. in Cambridge Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be various seedlings including hot peppers, eggplants, herbs, leafy greens and beneficial flowers for pollinators. The eco market will include many local, small businesses with gifts for the home and garden.
In Heidelberg, there's a community garage sale Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
There's a repair cafe and freehub community bike centre hosted by the Guelph Tool Library at the Guelph Bible Chapel on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items that can be repaired include electronics, clothing, computers, clocks and bicycles.
In Stratford, an Indigenous art market and cultural celebration will be held at the Stratford Perth Museum Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include vendors inside and outside the building.
The Rockway Entertainers have a spring concert Saturday afternoon at the Rockway Centre in Kitchener.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service is hosting an open house on Saturday with tours and also entertainment including Eric Traplin, canine demonstrations, a climbing wall and a bouncy castle. Donations to the food bank will be accepted.
The K-W Titans basketball team is on the road, hoping to wrap up their best-of-five playoff series against the Newfoundland Rogues on Friday. Tip off for Game 3 is at 5:30 p.m. ET and you can watch the game through BSL TV (there's a link on the K-W Titans website, a subscription is required).

Waterloo Town Square
This pop-up event will feature veggies in so many different ways — from pies to donuts, baklava and pizza. There will be giveaways, samples, raffles and activities for all ages as well as information booths and groups.
Young Brilliance
Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Kitchener
A group called Musicians of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, who formed after the symphony went bankrupt last fall, will perform with conductor Andrei Feher at this concert.
This performance will also feature nine-year-old pianist Murasaki Matsutani, who will play a piano concerto by Mozart.
It will also feature music by Camille Saint-Saens, who could play all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas from memory by age 12; Lili Boulanger, who at age 10 could play piano, organ, harp, violin and cello, and soon became the first female composer to win the Prix de Rome; and Sophie Carmen Edkhardt Grammaté who began her career as a published composer at age 11.
Home opener for Royal City Roller Derby
Saturday 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Victoria Road Recreation Centre, Guelph
The Royal City Roller Derby are hosting two bouts. At 5 p.m. the Rum Rollers take on Toronto Roller Derby's Toxins. At 7 p.m., the Killer Uprising take on the Tri-City Roller Derby.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and there is limited seating available so bring your own chair if you can.
Night Market and Concert
Friday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
WMB Church, 19 Ottawa St. N., Kitchener
This free event wraps up Youth Week for oneRoof Youth Services and will feature local, small businesses, food trucks, a book sale and live music by Folklore Junction and others.

Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
University of Guelph Arboretum
Saturday is World Migratory Bird Day and it's also the third annual Bird Day event in Guelph, but this year the focus will be on what birds eat: insects.
The event will include guided bird walks, family events and free bird-themed swag.
