Kenan Thompson's comedic genes definitely run in the family.

While recently chatting with PEOPLE at Nintendo New York — where Thompson showed off his impressive Mario Kart 8 Deluxe skills on Nintendo Switch — the longtime SNL star, 46, talked about his love of being a girl dad to two funny daughters.

"They both think they're hilarious," Thompson says of daughters Georgia, 9, and Gianna, 5. "They both think they're way more funnier than I am and they kind of are."

"Kids say the darnedest things, it's pretty true," he says with a laugh. "They're really endearing."

When they're not getting a laugh out of their dad, Georgia and Gianna love to game alongside the comedian.

Thompson tells PEOPLE he's a "day one" Nintendo-lover, and "remembers vividly that it was always special" for him and his family.

"It always felt like something we could all do together from the beginning. Growing up with Nintendo Systems through the years with the Game Boy and 64, and now to be at Nintendo Switch area, it's really fascinating to see how far it's grown and how much you can do with it."

Now, playing on Nintendo Switch is a family affair — including his younger daughter, who Thompson says is the "most competitive one."

"It's fantastic and it's very nostalgic to see a child's wonder with something so fascinating," he says of playing with his girls. "But the games now compared to when I was growing up, it's just vastly, vastly much more in-depth as far as what you can do."

With Father's Day quickly approaching, Thompson says he's looking forward to just "spending a lot of time with the girls" on the special holiday.

"As much time as I can spend with my babies is great," he tells PEOPLE.

"Now that I'm a father, I'm also definitely checking in on my dad and giving him his props," he adds. "And all my friends that are parents as well, the dads kind of pat each other on the back for a year around the sun of being a patriarch basically, if you're lucky enough to be that."

The All That alum also shares that his girls, who he shares with ex Christina Evangeline, are "great little gift-givers."

"They made me a poster that said No. 1 Dad," he recalls, adding that other gifts have included "No. 1 Dad mugs or best dad in the world T-shirts."

The actor says he's excited for a "nice summer of traveling" with his daughters to go visit family — with some gaming included along the way.

"We can connect and all have an adventure together," he says. "All the game time in between, it's going to be awesome."
