Sheriff’s deputy shot, another man dead as standoff with Kentucky police ends

A Kentucky sheriff’s deputy was shot and another man is dead in a Monday incident in Wayne County, according to Kentucky State Police and media reports.

The incident happened on Carters Dock Road in Alpha. KSP said the deputy was transported to the University of Tennessee Hospital with injuries. The deputy has since been released from the hospital.

WKYT, the Herald-Leader’s news-reporting partner, reported the deputy was shot in the chest while serving papers. The deputy was wearing a vest during the shooting that saved his life, according to WKYT.

FOX56 identified the deputy as Cody Neal.

Another man was declared dead at the scene, according to KSP. No details were given on how the man died or the man’s identity.

No other injuries were reported. KSP said it is investigating the shooting and will release further details after witnesses are interviewed and facts are gathered.

“Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case,” KSP said in a press release.

A standoff occurred after the shooting but it has since ended, according to Lex 18. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Monticello Police Department and Kentucky State Police were on scene during the standoff.

In a Facebook post, the city of Monticello said they’re praying for Neal and the officers who responded to the scene.

“Today showed what small town is all about,” the city said in a Facebook post. “As the horrible news spread throughout the community of the officer involved shooting, with the wayne county sheriff dept. prayers filled the heavens that our neighbor would be healed.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
