Kevin Spacey Blasts Network Behind Upcoming Docuseries, Claims Project Is a 'Desperate Attempt for Ratings'

The two-part documentary 'Spacey Unmasked' premieres on May 6 and 7 and is set to chronicle his life up to his acquittal after facing 12 counts of sexual assault

Kevin Spacey is not pleased with the network behind upcoming documentary Spacey Unmasked.

The former House of Cards leading man, 64, wrote in a May 2 post on X, “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that @Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters.”

He alleged that the British network refused the extension, reasoning that “a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’” to refute accusations against him.

“I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network's one-sided 'documentary' about me in their desperate attempt for ratings,” the actor continued. “There's a proper channel to handle allegations against me and it’s not Channel 4.”

Spacey added that every time he has been given a “proper forum” to address allegations against him, they have “failed under scrutiny.”

He vowed he would no longer remain silent, telling his followers to “tune in this weekend” to his X account to see his response.

Following the star’s post, Channel 4 and Roast Beef Productions provided a joint statement to PEOPLE: “Spacey Unmasked will broadcast on 6th and 7th May. Kevin Spacey has been given sufficient opportunity to respond.”

The trailer for the docuseries, which will examine Spacey’s life from childhood to superstardom and his fall from grace, was released via Variety on April 26.

Per the official description, Spacey Unmasked is “a forensic look at a man who was once one of the most admired and respected actors in the world.” The two-part documentary will contain “never-seen-before interviews and archives” that chronicle his life up to his acquittal after facing 12 counts of sexual assault.

In response to news of the documentary, a rep for Spacey provided Variety a statement from the actor: “I’m honored to be starring in my first film with Warner Brothers in many years. I hope the Academy takes note of some of the great acting by the lesser known cast.”

The former House of Cards star was accused of sexual assault by several men in 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement. On Oct. 29, 2017, Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making sexual advances on him when he was 14 years old.

More allegations surfaced in the coming weeks, with filmmaker Tony Montana claiming Spacey groped him in 2003 and a London theater finding 20 counts of “inappropriate behavior” against the Academy Award winner.

Over the years, Spacey faced multiple charges of sexual assault and civil suits on the grounds of sexual misconduct. Rapp, 52, sued the actor in 2020, three years after his initial claims. However, following a 2022 trial, Spacey was found not liable for battery related to Rapp’s accusations.

Spacey was also charged with 12 counts of sexual assault in the U.K. for incidents between 2001 and 2013, to all of which he pled not guilty. In July 2023, a court found him not guilty of nine charges, with the other three struck out.
