A man who entered an eating contest choked to death on a chicken wing at KFC.

Fredy Jayadi was attempting to eat three wings in under five minutes during the ‘Eat or Treat’ contest in West Jakarta, Indonesia, when he got into trouble.

The 45-year-old began choking after his third wing and tried to flush it down his throat with a glass of water.

However, he collapsed and was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Organisers O2 Accion cancelled the contest as a result of the death.

They said in a statement: “We are fully supporting the Jayadi family and as well as cooperating with inquiries from the authorities.”

KFC confirmed they were merely offering their stores as the venue for the competition and had nothing to do with organising it.

O2 Accion’s chief programming officer, Budi Raharja Sulaiman said that contestants were made to sign a declaration before taking part to confirm that they were in good health.

Police are now investigating the death and confirmed they will look into whether the safety of competitors was taken into account.

Criminal unit police chief Taufik Iksan said: “We are interviewing all witnesses, contestants, audience members and the organisers.

“One of our findings is that the organisers failed to provide medical personnel.

“We are also waiting for autopsy results.”

Mr Jayedi had reached the elimination stage of the contest, while the winner of the grand final was set to be given a £367,000 prize.
