Jackson Proskow has more details on the now-unsealed warrant.
Saint John is getting "the short end of the stick" when Air Canada makes decisions about flights into New Brunswick, says David Duplisea, CEO of the Saint John Region Chamber of Canada. Saint John flights are being cut to only two per day, while Fredericton's has six daily flights and Moncton five, Duplisea said. "Air Canada should not be picking winners [and] losers in New Brunswick with regards to local economies and airports," he wrote in a letter this week to Air Canada president Michael Rou
A Quebec-based chain of private medical clinics recently opened an office in Dartmouth, N.S., setting off alarm bells for local supporters of publicly funded medicine. Dr. Adam Hofmann, co-founder of Algomed, says he's a strong advocate for public health care but Canada's strained system can't meet the needs of citizens. "We can't stand by anymore while people are dying, literally dying, because they don't have family doctors," Hofmann said. "If you're talking about a universal public health-car

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Western countries agreed Thursday to continue long-term funding to help Ukraine’s military keep fighting nearly 5 1/2 months after Russia invaded its neighbor, saying 1.5 billion euros ($1.5 billion) has been pledged so far and more is coming. The money is for enhancing armaments production, including artillery and ammunition; developing and strengthening the training of Ukrainian soldiers and assisting Ukraine’s efforts to demine areas. “All the countries that came to
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador officials say the state of emergency called last weekend because of raging wildfires in the centre of the province will end on Saturday. Wildfire behaviour, air quality and weather conditions were all encouraging enough to support the decision, the Department of Justice and Public Safety said Friday in a news release. "The current forecast is showing favourable weather conditions and continuing to trend in a positive direction," the department said. T

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's prime minister said Friday that “huge amounts of chemical waste” were probably dumped intentionally into the Oder River, which runs along the border with Germany, causing environmental damage so severe it will take the river years to recover. Tons of dead fish have been seen floating or washed ashore on the Oder's banks over the past two weeks but the issue only erupted into a major scandal late this week. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, whose government is unde

Regular, unleaded gasoline now sits at $1.89 per litre on the Avalon, $1.91 in some parts of central Newfoundland and as high as $2.01 in Ramea. In Labrador West, customers are paying $1.98 at the pumps, while those in more remote parts of the Big Land are shelling out as much as $2.58 per litre.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Congress gave final approval Friday to Democrats' flagship climate and health care bill, handing President Joe Biden a back-from-the-dead triumph on coveted priorities that the party hopes will bolster their prospects for keeping their hold on Congress in November's elections. The House used a party-line 220-207 vote to pass the legislation, which is but a shadow of the larger, more ambitious plan to supercharge environment and social programs that Biden and his party
It's an eyebrow-raising statistic: Essex County OPP says there's a 63 per cent increase in vehicle thefts compared to this time last year. And often, it involves people either leaving their keys or key fobs unattended in their vehicles. Const. Steven Duguay says organized crime is often tied to vehicle thefts. But outside of that, he says, they're typically "crimes of opportunity." "You'll have people walking through neighbourhoods at night and checking door handles on cars, looking for loose ch

MILAN (AP) — The leader of Italy's Democratic Party warned Saturday of the threats that Italy's right-wing nationalistic parties pose to European democracy in a video released in multiple languages, and promised that his party would keep Italy at the center of the European Union if it wins the country's early parliamentary election next month. The video by Democratic Party leader Enrico Letta comes days after the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, did a multilingual video

The two children at the centre of Monday's Amber Alert issued in Saskatchewan remain safe with authorities in South Dakota, but more details are coming out about their journey, including how they, their mother and her common-law partner got across the border. White tipped sharks are sleek and beautiful animals that live in many waters around the world. These sharks make their home in Papua New Guinea, patrolling the tall pillars that rose from underwater volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The sharks feed on the smaller fish that make their home around the rocky ledges and the coral that grows on them. A group of scuba divers have entered the ocean to study the sharks and gather photographs and video footage of their feeding behaviour. Understanding the sharks is a crucial first step in helping with their conservation. Using scraps of fish, the sharks are encouraged to come closer for a close up view. This will help the researchers to observe and record injuries, parasites, growth rates, and other important data. The bait does its job and the sharks show very little shyness. Some even come close enough that they could literally receive a belly rub. There is a strict hands off policy here though, as physically interacting with the animal life is usually irresponsible. As we see though, sometimes the sharks do not obey these rules. One shark was engaging in what is known as testing behaviour. White tips will bump a diver, or other prey, to see what the reaction will be. Anything that is regarded as a submissive or fearful reaction will encourage a more aggressive follow up, with potentially serious consequences. It is advisable to demonstrate that the shark will not be allowed to bite without challenge. This researcher does exactly what an experienced and confident scuba diver will do and she shows the shark that she will not allow a bite. Although touching the sharks is to be avoided at all costs, this is a definite exception. The shark was not injured in any way and the strike would not cause pain. A shark's nose is tough enough that it would barely feel the impact of a human punch. But the message was clear and the shark abruptly turned in a different direction. See these incredible animals close enough to touch never gets old. It also demonstrates how sharks will rarely attack a human with the intent to bite, unless the human acts fearfully or irresponsibly.
