Who Killed Ahsan Payton? 6-Year-Old Boy Was Fatally Shot at Fourth of July Party, Suspect at Large

Police in Maryland are searching for a suspect after a Fourth of July shooting left a 6-year-old child dead.

The Prince George County Police Department in Maryland announced it is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for anyone with information on who opened fire on a holiday gathering in Temple Hills, leaving 6-year-old Ahsan Payton dead and two others injured.

Police say the shooting occurred around 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, during a neighborhood gathering in the 4500 block of Akron Street. Police said Payton was located “suffering from a gunshot wound” and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police did not say where the child had been shot, but noted that Payton eventually succumbed to his injuries and died on Saturday, July 6.

Two other adults who attended the gathering were also injured, including a man who had non-life-threatening injuries and a woman who was “treated at the scene” for a “graze wound,” police said.

Police said as of Monday, July 8, no arrests had been made in the case. WJLA reported that police officials were looking for two potential suspects.

Aisha Braveboy, the state attorney for Prince George’s County, told NBC News 4 Washington: “We will be charging them once they are identified with the maximum charges and seeking the maximum penalties."

"It is unacceptable that our neighborhoods, our celebrations, and our very homes are not safe from the threat of firearms," Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks told WJLA in a statement. “We remain committed to our efforts to remove illegal guns from our streets and protect our Prince Georgians from such tragedies. Every resident has the right to live in peace and safety."

Video obtained by the outlet reportedly showed leftover fireworks and trash left on the ground where the shooting occurred. A bullet was also found lodged inside a wall of a couple’s home after it went through a window, though the couple said they weren’t injured, per NBC News 4 Washington.
