‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Enjoys a Week as the Top Home Release, Before ‘Dune: Part Two’

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.

Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.

Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

“Panda” debuted at #1 on both charts (Fandango lists by revenue earned). Fandango also lists a bundle of all four “Panda” titles for $54.99 (“4” alone is $19.99 to rent, $29.99 to digitally own); that package is #2 for the week.

Otherwise, the two charts were relatively stable. “The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM) remains the highest VOD ($5.99) title, second at iTunes, third at Fandango.

“One Life” (Bleecker Street), with Anthony Hopkins as a British man who saved children during World War II, debuted on both lists (#6 at Fandango best). Two other new releases had single appearances — “Damaged” (Lionsgate), with Samuel L. Jackson as a Chicago detective whose work takes him to Scotland, is #7 at iTunes ($6.99 to rent), while “Sleeping Dogs” (The Avenue), this time with Russell Crowe as an Australian detective suffering from memory loss, is #9 at Fandango ($14.99 to rent initially).

“Imaginary” (Lionsgate) at $19.99 is #2 at Fandango, but inexplicably it didn’t make iTunes’ top 30. Google Play revised its chart after several weeks of going dark — but now it lists only film rentals under $4. (for the record, “Love for Delivery,” a 1994 Hong Kong rom-com is #1).

“What Jennifer Did,” an original Netflix documentary, has the #1 spot at the streamer. Other new originals in its top 10 include the animated “Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp” at #4, “Stolen,” a Swedish drama set in Lapland #6, and “Love Divided,” a Spanish rom-com at #10. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has started its sixth month of consecutive top 10 placement, which is a record or close.

After a brief trial, we won’t include the top 10 most streamed films via the Reelgood app. It is no reflection on their accuracy in gauging their users’ interest. But after comparing its list with Nielsen’s multi-week delayed broader survey, the Reelgood demographic appears to have significantly different preferences. Using it as the sole list of most-streamed films seems misleading.

iTunes and Google Play rank films daily by number of transactions, while Fandango at Home lists by revenue. The listings below are for Monday, April 15. Google Play’s top 10 has not been updated, now for three weeks. We will list them if and when they return.
