Roughly 378 miles from Hollywood, the city of trees has attracted directors throughout the years to film both movies and documentaries in Sacramento.

Academy Award winning film, “Lady Bird,” is the most widely known Sacramento based film. But there are more Hollywood films that spotlight Sacramento’s charm and tree-lined streets.

Below is a list of movies that have been filmed in Sacramento through the years. Some mentions may have just had quick cameos in the Sacramento area, but nonetheless brought attention to the capital city.

“Lady Bird:” A coming-of-age comedy drama based in Sacramento. The movie has cameos of the Fabulous 40s neighborhood and the rose garden in McKinley Park. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig, who was born and raised in Sacramento.

“American With No Address:” A 90-minute documentary centered on unhoused communities in America.

“Not Your Year:” Filmed in El Dorado Hills, the movie is based on a record label owner who gets rich quick then loses it all.

“N-Men:” A documentary highlighting Sacramento’s skateboard scene in the 20th century.

“Phenomenon:” Starring John Travolta, this 1996 film is based on a man who suddenly becomes a genius on his birthday, but encounters problems along the way due to his new gift. The movie was shot in Auburn.

“Life:” Starring Eddie Murphy and Bernie Mac, this 1999 film was shot in West Sacramento. It’s based on two men who are framed for murder during the Prohibition-era.

“Frankie and Johnny:” This 1991 romance comedy starring Al Pacino. The movie has scenes that were shot in Sacramento and Folsom.

“American Beauty:” Sacramento’s tree canopy makes a cameo in this 1999 romance drama which was awarded an Academy Award for Best Picture.
