Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix Share a Dance in New “Joker: Folie á Deux ”Photos Shared by Director on Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day, director Todd Phillips is celebrating the love between the Joker: Folie á Deux's criminal couple.

Phillips, 53, shared three new photos on Instagram of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga getting close as their respective characters, Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, and Dr. Harleen Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn.

In one image, Phoenix, 49, is seen in the Joker’s signature makeup while standing beside Gaga, 37, who wears a muted version of Harley Quinn’s mismatched red and blue makeup.

The following photo shows Gaga smiling as she touches her nose with Phoenix’s nose while they stand face-to-face on set. Phoenix stares into his costar’s eyes but barely cracks a smile in their closeup encounter.

The final image captures the fictional couple dancing in each other’s arms. They’re seen on the Folie á Deux set, where Phoenix dips Gaga as they slow dance.

“Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24,” Phillips wrote in a caption, including the film's release date.

During Valentine’s Day last year, the director shared one of the first peeks at the sequel, posting the first photo of Gaga alongside Phoenix. Since then, Phillips has sparingly shared photos of the upcoming feature.

In April 2023, he shared two images of the film’s leads and announced the production concluded. “That’s a wrap," he wrote. "Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.”

More recently, Phillips celebrated the holiday season by treating curious fans with two more images from the film. The first image showed Phoenix enclosed in presumably his Arkham Asylum cell — which he was placed into in the final scene of Joker. In the other image, Phoenix is seen with Gaga looking toward him in a second image.

Folie á Deux is set to premiere on Oct. 4, the fifth anniversary of the first film's release. When Phillips commemorated the first film's fourth anniversary back in October, he shared an image of Phoenix standing in the rain surrounded by a variety of different-colored umbrellas.

"Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come," he wrote at the time.

Joker set box-office records upon its release in 2019. A sequel was officially confirmed in June 2022. The same month, PEOPLE confirmed Gaga was in talks to play Harley Quinn.
