‘Leave The World Behind’ Races Toward Netflix Most Popular Film List; ‘Rebel Moon’ Stays At No. 1 During Christmas Week

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is still No. 1 on Netflix.

In its first full week on the streamer, the first part of Snyder’s science-fiction epic racked up 34M views, making it first among the English-language film list from December 25 to 31 — and the most-watched title on the streamer. Add that to the 29M views that the film managed in its debut weekend, and Rebel Moon currently stands at around 63M views for 10 days of availability.

It’ll need to nearly triple that viewership in the next 80 or so days in order to make it among Netflix’s most popular films of all time. Rebel Moon is off to a fine start, though it’s likely the streamer was hoping for a stronger full week of viewership, considering there’s another installment and a director’s cut coming down the pipeline. For reference, Extraction 2, which is currently No. 10 on Netflix’s most popular film list, had just over 85M views by this time. The films are about the same runtime, so it’s not as though Rebel Moon‘s 134-minute length is the thing hurting its views.

There is still plenty of time for Rebel Moon to crack the most popular list and, regardless, it stands to rack up a hefty audience in its 91-day premiere window. Extraction 2 made it on the list after 66 days with 129M views, so it wouldn’t be surprising for Rebel Moon to take even longer than that.

Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind remained at No. 2 this week with another 14.6M views. This film is also chugging along toward the most popular list. With about 115M views in its debut month, it’s looking more and more like it will claim a spot. It has until mid-February to beat Extraction 2‘s 134M views in 91 days. Viewing would really need to fall off a cliff for it to miss the mark.

If Leave The World Behind does continue to perform, that could also place bar for making the most popular list much higher for Rebel Moon, since that film’s premiere window doesn’t end until the end of March.

Third place among films was Garry Marshall’s rom com Pretty Woman with 8.4M views. The film arrived on Netflix in the UK during the holidays, and it clearly is interesting viewers. That could have something to do with Julia Roberts starring in Leave the World Behind as well.

Also on the film list was Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget at No. 4 with 8.2M views, The Super Mario Bros. Movie at No. 5 with 7.4M views Leo at No. 6 with 6.7M views, and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick debuted at No. 7 with 6.2M views.

It was a sleepier week for TV, especially on the English-language side of things. Berlin was the most-watched series for the week with 11.3M views, claiming No. 1 on the non-English list.

The English TV list was dominated by comedy specials. Ricky Gervais: Armageddon debuted at No. 1 with 8M views, Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer opened at No. 5 one day after its premiere with 2.2M views, and Trevor Noah: Where Was I landed at No. 8 with 1.7M views.

Elsewhere, My Life with the Walter Boys spent its fourth week on the list at No. 2 with 5.4M views, while the sixth and final season of The Crown held its reign in third place with 3.6M views.
