Lexington High School put on safety protocol for 2nd time in a month after message

Students at Lexington High School were required to stay indoors Thursday afternoon as the campus was put into a safety protocol over a disconcerting message sent to a school employee.

As of shortly after 3 p.m., everyone at Lexington High School and the adjoining Lexington Technology Center was continuing lessons as normal Thursday afternoon, but they were unable to leave the buildings, or allow anyone else in, until safety measures were lifted later Thursday afternoon, the school district said.

In an email sent to parents, Lexington 1 spokeswoman Libby Roof said the procedures where implemented because of a “message received by a school employee,” which was “similar to one received the week before Spring Break” and has a “very low probability of credibility.” School officials worked with law enforcement on the response to the message.

On March 27, Lexington High went into a similar safety protocol after a message was reported to an administrator about a student with a weapon on campus. The message also included a threat to the school, The State reported at the time. No credible threat was found at the time.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Office dispatched additional deputies to the campus Thursday afternoon, the agency posted on its social media feeds.
