A lightning-caused wildfire in the Dehcho may be

A wildfire discovered on Friday in the Dehcho is burning close to Highway 7.

Wildfire FS008-24 is one of two new lightning-caused fires discovered in the Dehcho overnight.

It is currently burning less than one kilometre away from the Highway 7, about 17 kilometres past the junction of Highway 7 and Highway 1. It will likely be "highly visible" to anyone travelling through the area, N.W.T. Fire warns.

The wildfire is nine hectares in size, and is being attacked by air tankers, N.W.T. Fire said in a noon update.

Anyone travelling on Highway 7 is encouraged to check the N.W.T. highway conditions map for information on road conditions.

Another new lighting-caused wildfire in the Dehcho, FS007-24, is located 42 kilometres south-southwest of the Fort Simpson Airport on the east side of the Liard River.

That fire is currently two hectares in size, and is being attacked by fire crews and air tankers, N.W.T. Fire said.

Neither wildfire is currently considered a threat to cabins or communities, according to N.W.T. Fire.

The Dehcho is currently under a region-wide fire ban.
