Line of Duty star Brian McCardie has died at the age of 59.

News of McCardie's death was announced by his sister Sarah McCardie, who shared a statement on her Instagram.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie (59), beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many," read the post caption, alongside various shots of her late sibling.

"Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April. A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon. We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts.

Sarah signed off asking for privacy for the family at this time, confirming details of funeral arrangements would follow in the days ahead.

The actor is best known for playing organised crime boss Tommy Hunter in season two of the hit BBC series and for playing prisoner Jackson Jones in Time starring Sean Bean.
