Linebacker, cornerback among Panthers’ biggest remaining needs entering Day 3 of NFL Draft

The Panthers will continue to plug holes in their roster on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.

Following the Day 2 selections of wideout Jonathan Mingo and pass rusher DJ Johnson, the Panthers own two picks on Saturday. The team has one pick (114th overall) in the fourth round and a single selection (145th overall) in the fifth round.

With quarterback, wide receiver and pass rusher needs checked off from the first two days of selections, the Panthers will probably turn their attention to other weaknesses within the depth chart.

Here are the Panthers’ remaining roster needs entering Day 3:

Interior defensive line

Current depth chart: Derrick Brown, Shy Tuttle, DeShawn Williams, Henry Anderson, Marquan McCall, Bravvion Roy, John Penisini, Raequan Williams

With the Panthers moving to a 3-4 front, the front office should try to beef up the defensive line with some more natural fits for the scheme. While Brown and Tuttle are locked into starting roles, the rest of the group is somewhat up in the air. Another prospect could serve as a long-term piece for this puzzle.

Inside linebacker

Current depth chart: Shaq Thompson, Frankie Luvu, Brandon Smith, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Arron Mosby, Chandler Wooten

Smith, last year’s fourth-round pick, is the only inside linebacker under contract beyond 2024. With the switch to the 3-4, the Panthers should try to develop some long-term depth at the position. Luvu and Thompson will start inside with rover Jeremy Chinn working as a linebacker in dime packages.

Cornerback

Current depth chart: Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson, C.J. Henderson, Keith Taylor Jr., Stantley Thomas-Oliver, Herb Miller

Horn, Jackson and Henderson have all dealt with major injuries over the past two years. Last season proved that the depth behind them needs to be upgraded. While Taylor flashed a bit last season, he needs some competition after a couple of rough outings towards the end of this past campaign.

Offensive tackle

Current depth chart: Ikem Ekwonu, Taylor Moton, Larnel Coleman

The Panthers badly need a swing tackle. Coleman is a relative unknown who was plucked off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad last year. Luckily, the Panthers should have several options on Day 3 to consider in replacing Cam Erving, who remains a free agent. Look for Carolina to target a versatile lineman with the ability to play guard and tackle.

Tight end

Current depth chart: Hayden Hurst, Ian Thomas, Tommy Tremble, Giovanni Ricci, Stephen Sullivan

While the Panthers have a solid depth chart at the position, the new staff could look to add to the group to improve the long-term outlook of the offense. Hurst and Thomas will be the primary tight ends, but the Panthers may try to upgrade their third spot ahead of Tremble. Still, this need is low priority.
