A list of coffee, tea shops opening in Wichita, Derby and beyond — and one that’s on hold

Wichita — and towns nearby Wichita — are getting even more options for coffee, tea and boba.

Following, you’ll find info about shops that are coming to Wichita, Derby, Augusta, Goddard, Mulvane and more. Plus, you’ll find an update about a promised Maize coffee shop that’s hit some roadblocks.

Wichita

NOW OPEN — Vita Bella, 9310 W. Central: This new shop — specializing in iced coffee, boba, frappe drinks and “refreshers” infused with things like collagen, glutathione, ginseng and more — has just opened in the old Dairy Queen building at 9310 W. Central. Vita Bella is a chain based in the Philippines that is franchising in the United States, and its new spot on West Central — previously home to a string of fast Mexican food restaurants — comes with a drive-through that the shop is utilizing. Its hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays. The shop is closed on Sundays.

OPENING SOON — The Coop, 2812 E. Douglas: As we reported in July, The Coop owner Brant Dumford and his operational manager Whitney Feltrop were the successful bidders on the old Common Grounds coffee house on East Douglas, and they’re expanding their Derby concept into the space. Opening day is close, they say: They’re aiming for Sept. 15 but are still painting both the inside and outside of the 1909 house and adding new signs.

The owners started The Coop in 2020 as a unique coffee house and co-op bakery operating at 104 N. Baltimore in Derby. Wichita’s version will operate the same way: Home bakers, cooks and vendors will be able to rent small chunks of retail space to sell their products, and the shop will also offer a full menu of espresso drinks. Wichita’s The Coop also will have a board game library and space for people to gather and play. Details about how to get a game pass or membership were recently posted online at www.coopks.com/game

The Coop in Wichita will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. top 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

OPENING SOON, 7 Brew, 11465 E. 21st St.: Wichita’s third 7 Brew Coffee stand, this one near 21st and Greenwich, should be open later this month, based on the fact that it’s advertising its “swag day” will be on Sept. 30. New 7 Brew shops tend to offer their swag days, when customers can get a free T-shirt with the purchase of a large drink, a week to 10 days after shops open. Google says the shop will open on Sept. 11, but it will likely be a bit later than that.

Derby

OPENING SOON — HTeaO, 3001 N. Rock Road: The metro area’s third HTeaO iced tea shop is set to open on Sept. 15 in Derby. This one has a different franchisee than Wichita’s two HTeaO shops, which Michelle and Jacob Albracht operate at 1280 N. Tyler and at 12930 East 21st St. Leah Rempel, a former Rose Hill teacher, has the franchising rights in Derby as well as in southeast Wichita, and she’s hoping to open another store in the area within about 18 months.

Rempel, a diabetic, said she fell in love with HTeaO’s drinks when she tried the store in West Wichita. She loves that people can build their own tea drinks and control how much sugar goes into them. Her favorite flavors, she said, are coconut, mint and Georgia peach. She usually mixes flavors to make her beverage 1/3 sweet and 2/3 unsweet.

The Derby shop will celebrate its grand opening Sept. 15-17, when it will offer half-price cups of tea. It’ll also offer half-price gallons throughout September. The new HTeaO will open at noon on Sept. 15, then its hours will be 7 a.m. to 8:05 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 8:05 p.m. Saturdays,and 11 a.m. to 8:05 p.m. Sundays.

Augusta

OPENING SOON: M&J’s Coffeehouse, 529 State St.: Stan Kolbeck became interested in all things coffee a dozen years ago, and last fall, he began selling his roasted coffee beans online. That venture went well, and he decided he’d like to open a coffee shop and name it for his late parents — Maurice and Jeanette Kolbeck. Now, with the help of his wife, Cynthia, he’s about to do it. The couple plans to open their new shop, M&J’s Coffeehouse, in Augusta’s growing “Red Brick District” later this month. They’re aiming for a Sept. 18 opening that will be preceded by a few “soft opening” days.

Kolbeck, who lives in Andover, said he initially wanted to open a shop there, but real estate was too pricey. The same was true in Wichita, he said. Then, a friend suggested he check out Augusta, where a group of business people including Shane “Sugar Shane’s” Scott have been tirelessly working to create a downtown scene on State Street, the main drag. Kolbeck found a space that once held a bike shop and decided he liked it. Then, he bought the whole building.

The Kolbecks have been remodeling the space, which Stan now describes as “rustic,” with fireplaces, leather couches and exposed brick walls. There’s seating inside for about 40 people, and he’ll serve a full menu of espresso drinks, frappes, smoothies, teas and baked goods including coffee cake, muffins, cinnamon rolls and more.

Once open, the shop’s hours will be 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. It will be closed Sundays but will stay open late sometimes for special events.

Goddard

OPENING THIS FALL — The Rusted Bean Coffee Co., 19971 W. Kellogg: A new drive-through coffee shop, this one locally owned by Christy Reeder, a transplant from the Pacific Northwest who always dreamed of running her own coffee shop, should open in October on land just down from the Subway at 19951 W. Kellogg in Goddard.

Mulvane

OPENING THIS FALL — Scooter’s, 1226 SE Louis Drive: Prolific Scooter’s franchisee Mackenzie Burnett, who has Scooter’s drive-throughs all over Wichita, Goddard and Maize, is now expanding into Mulvane. By this fall, she said, she should have a Scooter’s open on the main drag in Mulvane. It will be Burnett’s ninth local Scooter’s store.

Maize

DELAYED — Ziggi’s Coffee, 4575 N. Maize Road: In the spring of last year, Colorado-based Ziggi’s Coffee shared plans to add one of its drive-through-only shops near 45th North and Maize Road. Since then, nothing much has happened.

When contacted, the Ziggi’s corporate office said the project is on hold.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, this project is currently at a standstill with no timeline on opening,” a Ziggi’s spokeswoman said in an email. She promised to provide updates when the project progressed.
