Final: South Carolina 100, Notre Dame 71

The Gamecocks start their season with a bang. After a close first quarter, South Carolina’s depth and speed stood out and delivered the team a huge non-conference win. Five Gamecocks finished in double figures, led by center Kamilla Cardoso’s 20 and guard MiLaysia Fulwiley with 17.

Blowout in full effect

This game has been over for a while. All 11 of South Carolina’s scholarship players have appeared, and the team’s led by about 30 points for most of the fourth quarter. This is going to be a resounding AP Top 10 win and an early reminder to the college basketball world that, despite a new-look roster, USC’s going to be problem this season.

End Q3: South Carolina 74, Notre Dame 49

A closer quarter, in terms of scoring margin, but same result. South Carolina has consistently been bigger, stronger and faster than Notre Dame all night and it’s showing. The Gamecocks’ 25-point lead exiting that quarter was their largest all game. C Kamilla Cardoso (18 points) and G Te-Hina Paopao (14) are in double digits, and South Carolina has recorded assists on 23 of its 31 made field goals.

Kamilla Cardoso shines

What a game for Kamilla Cardoso, the reigning SEC Sixth Woman of the Year. Playing in a featured role, Cardoso, the Syracuse transfer in her third year in the program, has 10 points in the third quarter so far and a 15-point, 13-rebound double double. Pure dominance from her today.

Halftime: South Carolina 48, Notre Dame 33

Another entertaining quarter and a huge swing in scoring margin there. USC outscored Notre Dame 24-8 to get out to its largest lead of the game. Freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley (seven points) had the play of the game with a circus layup. Teammate Raven Johnson told ESPN’s Holly Rowe at halftime of Fulwiley: “There’s no other freshman like her.”

Other USC leaders: G Johnson with nine points, C Kamilla Cardoso with five rebounds and 10 points, G Te-Hina Paopao with seven points and five assists. This was at one point a one-point game ... doesn’t feel like it right now.

USC pushing the pace

Halfway through Q2, leading 33-29, USC has 20 points in the paint and 14 fast break points — a lot of that’s from guards Raven Johnson and MiLaysia Fulwiley, who are playing very fast right now.

End Q1: Notre Dame 25, South Carolina 24

G Te-Hina Paopao leads the Gamecocks with seven points, two assists and two steals. Both teams are shooting 50% from the field in a high-scoring period. Notre Dame freshman Hannah Hidalgo has a game-high 13. USC’s also gotten contributions from F Sania Feagin (six points) and G Raven Johnson (five points).

First substitutions

The first two subs for USC midway through the first quarter are freshman guard Milaysia Fulwiley and junior forward Sania Feagin. Fulwiley, the former five-star in-state recruit, makes her presence known immediately w a nice pass under the basket to Kamilla Cardoso, who’s been super impactful thus far.

South Carolina starting lineup

The Gamecocks will start Raven Johnson, Te-Hina Paopao and Bree Hall at guard; Chloe Kitts at forward; and Kamilla Cardoso at center against Notre Dame. Kitts is the only surprise, getting the starting nod over Ashlyn Watkins and Sania Feagin.

Projected South Carolina starters

Oregon transfer Te-Hina Paopao is expected to be in the Gamecocks’ starting lineup Monday along with returnees Kamilla Cardoso, Raven Johnson and Bree Hall. It’s possible that USC goes with sophomore Chloe Kitts in the fifth starting spot. Johnson is the only player who’s started for the Gamecocks.
