There’s A Huge Sea Eagle On The Loose In Kent And Dog Owners Are Worried

An aggressive nine foot sea eagle named Rex is at large in Kent today - and pet owners are being warned to watch out.

The hunting eagle, which went missing after a birds of prey demonstration, is capable of carrying off an adult dog weighing up to 13lbs. That’s around the size of an adult Shih Tzu, miniature poodle or Italian Greyhound.

The massive bird, which makes a deep barking cry when aggressive, is thought to be flying around Kent since escaping a Dartford show on Sunday afternoon.

The transmitter used to keep track of the bird and avoid exactly this kind of situation failed, leaving Eagle Heights to appeal for public help.

A spokesperson for the park said: “Rex our Steller’s Sea Eagles has gone missing and we need your help to find him.

"We believe the transmitter used to trace him has failed and is not working.

"Rex is not dangerous but should not be approached or touched. If you see him just watch him from a distance and please call us immediately.”

Rex was seen on Monday afternoon perched in a tree in Lullingstone, Kent.

The Steller’s Sea Eagle, named Rex, usually eats wild salmon for dinner when at home at the Eagle Heights Wildlife Park - but the eagles have been known to indulge in a pet or wild bird when given the choice.

Wild Steller’s have even been recorded feasting on young seals weighing more than 18lbs.

A Kent resident, who has a number of Jack Russell terriers, is making sure to keep his pack of small dogs inside, just in case.

The local, who lives nearby, said: “We’re keeping the dogs inside - last thing I want to have to explain to my wife is why one of the dogs is soaring off into the sunset in the claws of a giant eagle.”
