How long will ‘false fall’ last in Sacramento? Here’s your Labor Day weekend forecast

“False fall?” It’s a thing.

A strong low-pressure system is blanketing the Sacramento region with autumn-like conditions. The drastic change in weather — regardless of however fleeting — is producing the potential for scattered showers, thunderstorms and slippery roads.

But don’t be too quick to cancel your Labor Day weekend plans.

“False Fall” is a conundrum not backed by weather experts — it’s nothing more than a couple of days of cool weather before the Central Valley’s typical heat swoops back in for the remainder of the summer.

And that’s exactly what the National Weather Service is forecasting over the next several days.

According to the weather service, there’s a 30% chance of rain on Friday. Winds are predicted to whip around 14 mph and gust up to 22 mph. By Sunday, meteorologist Chelsea Peters with the weather service said the area could see up to roughly 0.1 inches of rain.

Communities within the unincorporated areas could receive between 0.02 and 0.04 inches of rain. Further east in areas surrounding Folsom, chances increase to a little over 0.2 inches.

“Just enough to have some drops on your windshield,” Peters said. “I wouldn’t be too hung up on the precipitation.”

Between 1 and 1½ inches of rain could fall over areas east of Sacramento in the Sierra Nevada, where the worst conditions are expected.

Auburn and Grass Valley may get between a quarter and a half of an inch of rainfall.

Capital region’s Labor Day weekend forecast

Between Friday and Saturday, temperatures across the capital region will rise to the mid-70s. The lows will be around 61 degrees.

The weather is forecast to heat back up just in time for Labor Day, but nowhere near last year’s numbers.

On Monday and Tuesday temperatures rose to 114 degrees, Peters said. Over the next several days, temperatures ranged between 106 and 112 degrees.

This year, Labor Day is forecast to be 88 degrees with a low of 61 degrees. The days that follow are forecast to remain in the low 90s.
