A Lotus Evija Just Ran a 6:24 At the NürburgringLotus Cars

The standard Lotus Evija is no slouch. The electric Lotus hypercar already counts in the thousands of horsepower, so a faster model has to be seriously extreme to set the bar even higher. This is the Evija X, a prototype modified for lap times on tracks like the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It is already faster around that track than every production car ever built.

Officially, the lap of 6:24.047 shared by Lotus on Thursday is only the record for a car that shares a chassis with a production car. It is otherwise classified as a prototype, putting the Lotus third in a class with the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R Pikes Peak racer and the Le Mans-winning Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. The time is in league with the best ever achieved in competition at the Nordschleife, where a Porsche 956 Group C car raced by Stefon Bellof held the overall record at 6:11 for decades until the 919 Hybrid Evo came along.

Modifications include slick tires, massive aero, carbon brakes, and unique dampers. This is otherwise the Evija road car, complete with the 2000-plus horsepower output distributed over four motors. While the basic Evija is probably not going to come close to a 6:24 any time soon, the lap does suggest that the Lotus EV has a real shot at beating the Rimac Nevera's current EV production record of 7:05.28 if Lotus ever chooses to pursue it. Until then, the question is how fast the performance-focused Evija X could go in better conditions. 6:05 is a long way away, but if Lotus can reach that time, the hypercar will beat out the Volkswagen ID.R as the fastest EV in 'Ring history.
