Will the 'luck' be in your favour for St. Patrick's Day snow, Ontario?

Every year many Canadians join in the celebrations of St. Patrick's Day, with dozens of events and parades across Canada. This year, as luck would have it, a huge storm will be tracking across Ontario threatening more white than green for many. Depending on what side of the coin you're on, you may consider getting snow "lucky" or "unlucky."

But what are the historical chances of snow on St. Patrick's Day?

While celebrations go back hundreds of years, to find out your odds, we went back half a century. As it turns out, major cities like Toronto, Ottawa and even Windsor, have nearly a 25 percent chance of snow on St. Patrick's Day!

This year, many across northern and central Ontario are almost guaranteed snow on March 17. Parts of southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will be a toss-up, depending on the eventual track of the system and the temperatures involved.

By contrast, just last year, Toronto saw one of its warmest St. Patrick's Day in 15 years, getting up to 17.3°C. While it might not get that warm for some across southern Ontario this time around, it just might rain on their parade instead.
