Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival will temporarily close because of rain. When will it reopen?

The Macon Cherry Blossom Festival will be closed Friday because of heavy rain and strong winds in the forecast for Middle Georgia, event organizers announced Thursday.

The closure includes all events at Third Street Park and the festival at Carolyn Crayton Park Friday. The festival will carry on as scheduled Saturday before the final day of the event Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Atlanta says rain will hit the northern and central regions of Georgia much of the day Friday into Saturday morning. Gusty winds reaching 20 to 30 mph are possible, the NWS said. Rainfall is expected to reach 1 to 2 inches across the region. Macon is expected to get 1.5 to 2 inches.

The weather brings “minor flooding concerns” in urban or poorly drained areas, the NWS said.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 50s Thursday night, and some of Georgia could see rain overnight. Temperatures will reach the low 60s Friday, according to the NWS.

There are other events that may still take place Friday away from the parks.

“If they are sanctioned community events then they may remain open,” said Hannah Theus, the director of marketing and fulfillment for the Cherry Blossom Festival. “We are only closing official cherry blossom events that we produce.”

Hours have been updated for the festival this weekend. The “Food Truck Frenzy” will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The festival activities at Carolyn Crayton Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
