Mahomes baby rushed to ER. ‘Scariest 30 min of my life,’ says his mom, Brittany

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’ 8-month-old son, Bronze, was rushed to the emergency room this week after a “scary” run-in with peanuts.

Brittany, the co-owner of the Kansas City Current soccer team, shared the news in an Instagram Story on Thursday.

“We took a very scary and frantic trip to the ER yesterday after finding out this guy is highly highly allergic to peanuts,” she wrote. “The scariest 30 min of my life.”

His dad has peanut allergies as well. Patrick Mahomes told Men’s Health in 2021 he underwent tests and learned he’s allergic to most nuts as well as grass. Fortunately, he can play on the natural turf at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

About 33 million people have food allergies, including 1 in 13 children, says FoodAllergy.org.

Roughly 3.9 million people are allergic to tree nuts, the website notes.

Brittany Mahomes did not give any more details but posted about the incident with a picture of Bronze feeding from a baby bottle. “My perfect boy,” she captioned it.

Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, was born in November. His sister, Sterling, is 2.

Symptoms within minutes

Food allergies are most common in children, especially infants and toddlers, according to the Mayo Clinic. Having a family member with allergies is a risk factor.

The number of children with food allergies is rising, according to Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy hospital.

It’s possible to be allergic to any food, the hospital says. But these eight foods are the most common: peanuts, milk, eggs, fish, wheat, shellfish, soy and tree nuts.

Peanuts are a common cause of severe allergy attacks. The worst can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening emergency that requires treatment with epinephrine and a trip to the ER.

Most symptoms show up within two hours after exposure to peanuts, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. They usually begin in just a few minutes.

In most cases allergic reactions are mild, experts say. Signs of mild to moderate peanut allergy in babies include an itchy or runny nose, hives, itching or tingling around the mouth and throat, and wheezing.

Even if a child’s reaction to peanuts seems mild, experts advise consulting with the child’s doctor.

If the signs are severe, call 911 immediately, experts advise.

More severe symptoms include wheezing, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, a weak pulse, pale or blueish skin and significant swelling of the lips or tongue.

Some children outgrow peanut allergies. As children get older, their digestive systems mature and their bodies are less likely to react to triggering foods, the Mayo Clinic says.

Brittany Mahomes told her Instagram followers Thursday that her youngest, 8-month-old Bronze, seen here with his mom and sister Sterling, 2, had to be taken to the emergency room because of an allergic reaction to peanuts.

‘Allergic babies just miss out on so much’

Parents of children with food allergies live on constant high alert. This week the CPR Kids Facebook page shared the story of a mother who, like Brittany Mahomes, was scared by a recent incident with her toddler.

My 2-year-old is anaphylactic to both eggs and peanuts, and I really struggle to take him to play parks and soft plays due to the risk of him coming in contact with his allergens,” she wrote.

“I can’t expect it to be on the radar of non-allergy parents but simple hand washes after eating or picking up dropped food can really change the experience of an allergic child as of course the consequences of not doing that is huge.”

She said she couldn’t get to her son in time before he went down a slide behind a little boy holding fistfuls of cooked eggs his father was feeding him. “Which then resulted in all-over hives and some wheezing and then a hospital stay after having to give him his EpiPen,” she said.

“It’s just so hard I feel like allergic babies just miss out on so much, and we as parents have massive anxieties with normal everyday places.”

In April, Mahomes shared with her 1.3 million Instagram followers that Bronze’s delivery last November had complications, though she was in labor for about five hours, “pushed for 7 min and he was here.”

Answering questions in an Instagram Story, she said the umbilical cord “was wrapped around his neck two times and thankfully didn’t affect anything. He was fine.”

Last month, Patrick Mahomes told EW that Bronze is “still at the age we’re trying to get him to crawl.”

A few hours after Brittany posted Thursday about the trip to the emergency room, she posted another picture of Bronze, eyes closed, sucking on his finger.

“Another tooth coming in so he needed some extra snuggles tonight,” she wrote.
