Vince Ward charged with first-degree murder in Labrador City shooting

Man, 30, charged with murder in Labrador City

Investigators are flooding into Labrador City to probe an early morning shooting at a house that left one man dead Thursday.

Vince Ward, 30, was arrested after officers sped to a home on Pine Avenue, not long after a third party called for help around 3 a.m. about an altercation between two men.

Officers found a man dead inside. The victim has not yet been identified.

Ward is charged with first-degree murder.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon in St. John's, RNC spokesperson Const. Geoff Higdon said additional charges are expected to be laid in relation to the firearm that was allegedly used.

Victim's identification, cause of death under probe

Higdon said the victim and his alleged killer were the only people in the house at the time.

The identification process, including contacted next of kin, is not complete, Higdon said.

"We believe this was an isolated incident between two individuals who are known to one another," he said.

"There's no reason to believe there is a threat to the public or anyone in the community of Lab City [and neigbouring] Wabush."

Police are looking to speak with people who have information on what precipitated the fatal shooting.

Ward was expected to appear at provincial court in Labrador City Thursday afternoon.

Investigative teams from St. John's and Corner Brook are travelling to Labrador West to assist in the investigation.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to identify the victim and determine the cause of death.
