Carpenter, who had allegedly been in Texas when the Twitter post was made and is under investigation for the theft of a handgun, appeared in court Wednesday and has a detention hearing scheduled for Friday.

According to the complaint, Carpenter has three handguns, a shotgun, and two rifles.

"The FBI has confirmed I was a target of the heavily armed defendant in this matter," Nessel said on Twitter. "It is my sincere hope that the federal authorities take this offense just as seriously as my Hate Crimes & Domestic Terrorism Unit takes plots to murder elected officials."
