Can Man Dan camp-out raises food, money for Edmonton Food Bank

It had to be the warmest food bank camp out that Can Man Dan ever had.

Dan Johnstone's annual camp out was practically balmy with night time temperatures just below zero.

"The warmth has been on my side," he said.

Johnstone camped out at the SouthgateSafeway over four days, with the goal of collecting 30,000 lbs of food and raising $25,000 for Edmonton's Food Bank.

"The economy right now is not in the best shape," he said Sunday. "People are getting laid off and it's in pretty sad shape."

Johnstone will also be helping food banks in Fort McMurray and Lethbridge over the next two weeks.

Johnstone's childhood in a single-parent household inspired him to help others, he said.

"I know how it feels to go hungry," he said. "It was just hard to make ends meet. We relied on the food bank a lot."
