Man dead after shootout with sheriff’s deputies at Columbus hotel, officials say

The GBI has been called in to investigate a shooting involving Muscogee County Sheriff’s deputies Friday night at the Baymont Inn & Suites on Whitesville Road.

The GBI identified the victim as Oscar Alfonso Maxwell, 22. Maxwell was pronounced dead on the scene around 11 p.m., according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Sheriff’s deputies were preparing to arrest Maxwell on a warrant when Maxwell left his hotel room. Maxwell saw the deputies and returned to his room, firing several times, according to the GBI. Deputies returned fire, killing Maxwell.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Maxwell.
