A store owner has defended his decision to call his shop ‘Hitler’ – saying he doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Osama Farouq reportedly decided to name his shop in Egypt’s capital Cairo after the Nazi dictator – and even dot the ‘i’ with a swastika.

But Farouq claims the decision was not political.

“The name and the emblem drew my admiration so I decided to put them up on the front of my store,” he told Gulf News.

As you can imagine, the shop on the city’s Shawarbi Street, has drawn considerable criticism.

According to Gulf News, Egyptians and tourist have scolded the “young man”, with some spitting at the store, and at least one person attempting to remove the sign.

But Farouq said: “The matter does not deserve all this fuss. It’s just a name. Why are people so angry? I have nothing to do with politics.”

Despite the backlash, he says business has not been badly affected by the name change.

“Praise be to God, I have my own clients who come to the store because of the fine quality of my goods.

“I am not a communist or a person with a stony heart. I’m a Muslim who believes in one God.”
