Man Dies After Freak Knife Accident Outside Mass. Restaurant: 'Horrible Tragedy,' Family Says

A Massachusetts man died on Saturday after authorities say he suffered an "accidental" fatal knife wound in a restaurant parking lot.
Patrick Kenney Jr., 42, was found injured just after 9 p.m. local time in the Kowloon parking lot in Saugus, The Boston Globe, NBC affiliate WBTS and ABC affiliate WCVB reported. He later died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
“This incident appears to be accidental, and no additional parties are believed to be involved,” the Essex County District Attorney Office said in a statement, per the Globe.
Although police have not released additional details about his death, Kenney was reportedly wounded with a knife attached to the lanyard he was wearing around his neck, WBTS and WCVB reported, citing sources.
Kenney was allegedly at the restaurant for a birthday party with about 30 other people at the time, per WBTS
The Essex County District Attorney Office and the Saugus Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

Bob Wong, whose family owns Kowloon, told WBTS that he was devastated by the incident.
Wong shared that some in the Kenney family were regulars at the restaurant, saying they were "going through a tough period" and that the "focus" "should really" be on them.
PEOPLE's message to the restaurant was not immediately returned.

The man's family has said they believe what happened was a freak accident, according to the outlets.
In a statement, they described what happened as "a horrible tragedy."
“Our family is mourning the loss of Patrick, focused on his wife Lauren and two young children, and trying to make sense of this horrific tragedy," the family said, per the Globe. "Patrick was a loving father and husband, brother, son and loyal friend to many.”
A GoFundMe set up on behalf of the family has raised over $15,000 as of Monday afternoon.
His death remains under investigation by police and the district attorney's office.
