Nepean shooting victim may have shot himself, police say

Ottawa police say a man who was injured in a shooting Friday morning may have shot himself and is now facing several charges.

The incident occurred on Monterey Drive just west of the intersection of Baseline Road and Greenbank Road. Monterey Drive is closed between Abingdon Drive and Guthrie Street as police investigate.

The man called 911 at 7:03 a.m., according to paramedics. He was told to apply pressure to the wound by the 911 dispatcher and has been taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police said in a news release Friday afternoon that an 18-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences, including attempting to commit a break and enter, discharging a firearm with intent, careless use of a firearm, and breach of probation.

Police spokesman Chuck Benoit said the person who was sent to hospital and the person who was charged are, in fact, the same person. He added, however, that investigators are still trying to determine if there was a second person who may have pulled the trigger.

The investigation is ongoing.
