The man killed Friday in an armoured car robbery was the former roommate of convicted killer Thomas Svekla.

Edmonton police confirmed Randy James Munian was killed by a gunshot wound to the torso. They believe he was one of two suspects involved in the botched robbery attempt.

Police responded to the call at about 12:45 a.m. Friday at the TD Canada Trust near 25th Avenue and Hewes Way in southeast Edmonton. Once there they found Munian dead on the ground a few hundred metres from the bank.

Police say Munian and another suspect approached the armoured truck guards, pepper sprayed them and demanded cash, but the tactic didn't work. Munian was shot while facing the guard, who is unlikely to face criminal charges, sources tell CBC.

Sources also tell CBC News Munian had a lengthy criminal record and was on probation at the time of his death.

Munian lived with Thomas Svekla in a High Level townhouse in 2004.

In 2008, Svekla was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Theresa Innes. He was sentenced to life in prison and in May 2010 was declared a dangerous offender, meaning he'll remain in prison indefinitely.

Munian testified during the trial that he had met one of the women Svekla was accused of killing.

Svekla has since been a suspect in the disappearances of other sex workers.

Police say the other suspect involved in the robbery is still at large after fleeing. He is described as 5'10" with a medium build. He was wearing a dark hoodie at the time.

The EPS homicide and robbery sections continue to investigate.

Police say this is Edmonton's 27th homicide of the year.
