Man killed in overnight shooting in Columbia. Police say no arrests have been made

The Columbia Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that took place across the street from Benedict College’s Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Officers were responding to a ShotSpotter alert in the vicinity of the 2100 block of Waverly Street when they discovered a deceased adult male. ShotSpotter is a network of sensors spread across the city that can detect the location of gunfire.

The victim was found on the same block as the Carver-Lyon Elementary School.

Police said no arrests have been made.

The State has contacted the Richland County Coroner’s Office for more information about the deceased.
