ASIRT reviewing Memorial Drive crash that killed young man

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is reviewing a Friday night crash on Memorial Drive that killed one man and sent two passengers to hospital.

In a press release, police said an officer was driving a marked police vehicle along 36 Street through Eighth Avenue S.E. around 9:20 p.m. MT when the officer saw what they described as a suspicious black 2003 Lincoln Aviator.

Police say it appears the officer turned on their lights and sirens to try and pull the vehicle over but the driver did not stop and fled along 36 Street before heading eastbound on Memorial Drive.

The officer stopped the chase near 39 Street S.E. and turned off the vehicle sirens but the driver continued to flee.

Police say the driver then lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree at Memorial Drive and 44 Street S.E.

The driver, who was in his early 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene while a male passenger in his early 20s and a female passenger in her late teens were taken to hospital in critical condition but are now stable.

Police say it is standard procedure for ASIRT to be notified in a fatal failure-to-stop crashes.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or the vehicle prior to the crash, is being asked to contact police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.
