Man with loaded handgun arrested after fight at bar in Winnipeg

Senior assaulted, vehicle stolen in Crescentwood area

Police have arrested a man accused of assaulting another man and then loading a handgun in the parking lot of a Winnipeg bar.

Officers responded to a bar on Arlington Street near Logan Avenue at about 11:55 p.m. Monday after reports of a man armed with a gun.

Police said a man who assaulted someone at the bar left the building and was seen loading a hand gun in a vehicle parked outside.

Officers arrested a 25-year-old Winnipeg man. He has been charged with 13 offences, including assault, careless use of a firearm and possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm.

The suspect is known to police and was also charged with uttering death threats at police officers during the encounter, Const. Rob Carver said.

The initial investigation seems to indicate the man loaded the gun with hollow-point bullets, which are prohibited.

"[It] was a potentially deadly encounter," Carver said.

Carver said the incident doesn't appear to be targeted and he is thankful officers took control before anyone was injured.

"Incidents like this highlight what our officers need to deal with," Carver said. "They were able to disarm the individual and arrest him without any shots being fired ... which is I think a real testament to the men and women who work with me doing this job."
